Now that we are entering the year 2014, we may be in the process of setting up new goals to move forward with our purpose and mission. With this new burst of excitement and energy, let us make sure that we have cleared our minds and hearts of the unnecessary and unneeded energy that we may be holding within us. Perhaps we feel somewhat held back by a certain set of circumstances, that we have not taken the time to look at and explore.
Often, moving on is sometimes difficult to do when we are confronted with an experience that is not to our liking. Hopefully, we should know of joyful times, but when a challenging event occurs, we are often presented with feelings of helplessness, anger, resentment, etc. Thoughts that we have been taken advantage by someone, or that we wished we had made a better choice in our reaction to the event - keeps playing over and over, again and again, like the #1 song on the jukebox.
How can we let it pass and accept it with equanimity?
First, it is helpful to deal with the experience as soon as we are emotionally able.
We can begin by recognizing our emotions, allowing them to be expressed - so that they can be released. Then we can call forth each emotion, and let it tell us how it has an impact, and where the feeling shows up in our body. As we tune in to feel the emotion, we can allow for the intensity... until it passes on in due time. If any perceived or real damage is experienced from the past incident, we can work through our feelings of loss and move ourselves towards acceptance.
Confirming that circumstances are not within our control and acknowledging that we did the best of our ability, at that time, can be reassuring.
Chalking this up as a learning experience may bring us to a realization that we have grown and built inner strength.
Finally, on the condition that deep sadness or regret continues, consider asking God for strength to overcome. In the event that it applies, we can ask for forgiveness and allow ourselves to forgive ourselves, as well. Of course, professional help and support is always a possibility.
If we have faith in ourselves, in God’s intention and protection, and in living life with the purpose of benefiting from our life experiences, we can see the value, enrichment and joy in our lives. Now let us utilize each priceless moment.
